January 24, 2009 - Over 375 people attended Queens Winter Pride, the annual fundraiser for the Queens Lesbian and Gay Pride Parade and Festival which is always held on the first Sunday in June in Jackson Heights. This year's parade will be held on Sunday, June 7, 2009.
Dromm first organized the Winter Pride event in 1994 and he remains as one of the event's main promoters and organizers.
"Winter Pride is like the Al Smith Dinner of the Queens LGBT communities," said Dromm. "It a must do event." By that Dromm means that the Winter Pride Dinner Dance has become Queens most important "political" nonpolitical LGBT event. More than 20 state and city elected officials attended. As well as a large number of City Council candidates and other hopefuls also attended.
"Partisan politics are not discussed but many elected officials come looking for votes," Dromm said. "It's quite an impressive show of LGBT strength."
The event honored Council Member Rosie Mendez from Manhattan's Lower East Side, Phyllis Steinberg, president emerita of P-FLAG/NYC, and the Queens Tribune for the publication of its annual Queens Gay Pride edition.
Community leader and local businessman James Galloway has endorsed Daniel Dromm for the New York City Council, 25th District. Jim is a community organizer and civic leader in our community. He is the president of the LeFrak City Merchants Association and an active part of the LeFrak City Tenants Association.

Daniel Dromm: Running for City Council in Queens' Council District 25 against Helen Sears
Daniel Dromm is an educator, community organizer, union leader, and political activist. His experience and dedication to the community has led to Dromm being overwhelming elected Democratic District Leader in the 39th Assembly District, Part A (Jackson Heights, Elmhurst, Corona and Woodside in Queens) in 2002 and re-elected in 2004 and 2006.
Daniel Dromm is an award-winning New York City public school teacher. Since 1984, he has instructed and inspired thousands of students at PS 199Q in Queens. In 2006, Dromm was chosen as Outstanding Teacher of the Year by his school's principal...Dromm took a lead role in implementing several successful projects such as the "Philosophy for Children" project and the Integrated Language Arts project. He was hand-picked by the New York City Opera to give a workshop at Lincoln Center on bringing opera into the classroom. In 1997, along with colleague Barbara Baruch, Dromm won the 'UFT Kid's Day on Broadway' grant for his school. He has received awards from both the District and from the PTA for his dedication to students...
In 1992, Dromm courageously came out as an openly gay teacher. The story became front-page news in daily newspapers throughout the city. The ensuing battle tested Dromm's resolve as a fighter who is unafraid to take on the powers that be. Dromm defeated several unsuccessful attempts to remove him from his job and became a role model for equality in the workplace. This episode in Dromm's life illustrated to him how important tenure is as a protection for teachers.

“I am saddened and troubled to learn about the attack on Jassmir Singh, a young Sikh man, while walking the streets of Jackson Heights. This vicious attack is a reminder that we desperately need more law enforcement presence on 37th Avenue at night and on weekends. I am also deeply concerned about the likelihood that this may have been a hate crime. I am again calling on the Mayor and the City Council to institute a tolerance program in the New York City public schools. The increasing frequency and severity of these crimes has made it critical for our city to take action to insure that everyone is protected and respected. “
City Council candidate Daniel Dromm was honored to attend the historic inauguration of President Barack Obama. Dromm looks forward to bringing change to our community with progressive leadership in a new direction.

City Council candidate Daniel Dromm raised over $76,000 for his grassroots campaign for the 25th District seat in the most recent filing. Dromm is happy to report that the majority of his money was raised from local Queens residents. His experience in the community has made it possible for him to concentrate on individual contributions from working people in the neighborhood. More than 300 donors to his campaign live in the 25th City Council District. This overwhelming show of support is an indication that Dromm's focus on issues facing working families like education, quality of life concerns, job creation and civil rights are striking a chord with the community.

For many of us here in NYC, the 2008 election was already being overshadowed by the 2009 NYC elections. I know so many people running for office it is silly. But I take local politics seriously and I am hoping that Omaba's theme of "change" can be carried into the sordid politics of NYC.
Here is my tentative endorsement list for City Council races for 2009. Actually not really an endorsement list just yet. More like the races and candidates I am finding interesting enough to look into and watch. Consider this my shot across the bow for 2009 City Council races. This list is based on three main criteria:
1.) preferring progressives but also wanting to pick challengers who
have the best chance of winning against particularly lousy opponents;
2.) targeting some open seats, but primarily eyeing challenges to those
City Council members who voted for the Bloomberg Putsch and/or have been particularly weasley in other ways;
3.) taking Working Families Party preferences into account at least to some degree. I don't always like WFP's chosen candidates and they have accused me of being a party hack. But right now WFP is the force standing up to the worst Democrats in the city, so I would like to ally with them on this where it makes sense. For the WFP background on some of these races, go here.
QUEENS: Council District 25 (Queens) (Helen Sears is the incumbent to beat)
The candidate I am endorsing is Daniel Dromm. Dromm is a a public school teacher. I often like supporting real community members like teachers and police officers for office because I think they bring more to a legislature than the usual lawyers we elect do. Dromm was a founder of the Lesbian and Gay Democratic Club of Queens and chapter leader of United Federation of Teachers, PS 199Q. He has been endorsed by the United Federation of Teachers, Mark Green, and others. WFP seem to be considering him as well. Dromm received the "Community Service Impact Award" from the Times Ledger Newspapers (2006), the "Outstanding Teacher of the Year" PS 199Q Principal's Award (2006), and the "Citation of Honor" from the Queens Borough President (1995). Seems like exactly the experience we need on the City Council.
Dromm Welcomes New Police Officers to 115th Precinct
Democratic District Leader Daniel Dromm today welcomed approximately 100 new police recruits into the 115th Precinct. These new police officers will initially work in the Impact Zone along Roosevelt Avenue and its tributary streets from Jackson Heights to Corona. They will be on foot patrol within the next few days.
Dromm met with the officers at the Langston Hughes Library where a training was being held. He said, "Our community welcomes you and thanks you for the sacrifices you are about to make as New York City police officers. The NYPD has made a tremendous dent in crime in our neighborhood and we are most grateful."
The presence of these officers is a reassuring sign to many community residents. While speaking to the officers, Dromm tried to convey a sense of the pride "we feel in the diversity of our communities. The 115th Precinct is home to a broad array of people and I ask that you be sensitive to that."
Dromm pledged the communities' support for their valiant efforts to protect our neighborhoods. He also spoke about the enforcement of hate crime statutes and about domestic violence issues, among other things.
In conclusion, Dromm said, "I wish you lots of luck in your new career."

Dromm Attends Reading of Juan Nicolas Tineo's Hispanic Literature
Above: City Council candidate Julissa Ferreras, Juan Nicolas Tineo and Daniel Dromm
Daniel Dromm is a proud supporter and promoter of Hispanic literature. Dromm recently gave opening remarks in Spanish at a reception for author and poet Juan Nicolas Tineo at the Diversity Center on 37th Avenue in Jackson Heights. Juan read from his newly published book, "Temporario". During the day, Juan is a NYC public school teacher and a United Federation of Teachers Chapter Leader just like Dromm. Juan is a main organizer of Queens annual Hispanic Literature Fair which is co-sponsored by Assembly Member Jose Peralta. District 21 City Council candidate Julissa Ferreras, Assembly Member Jose Peralta, New Visions Democratic Club President Yonel Letellier Sosa, and District Leader Dorothy Phelan, among other dignitaries, also attended the event. Juan's book has been very well received.
