A Queens street now bares the name of a man who used to be a champion for the Jackson Heights community.
92nd Street between 34th Avenue and Northern Boulevard will now be known as Ivan Lafayette Way.
The Former Deputy Speaker of the New York State Assembly was remembered during a street renaming ceremony on Saturday.
The Democrat was elected to the State Assembly in 1976 and served for more than 30 years.
“He was concerned about all of the people who were moving into the district and bringing everybody into one fold; and making sure that everybody felt that Jackson Heights was there own,” said City Councilman Daniel Dromm.
The ceremony was held Saturday on what would have been Lafayette’s 88th birthday.
