Anti-Violence Project to raise awareness about violence after the death of Ever Orozco in Queens
by Clare Trapasso
Outraged members of the city’s gay community will hit the streets of Queens Friday night to let pedestrians know how to stay safe in the wake of a deadly stabbing.
The New York City Anti-Violence Project rally and public education campaign comes after Ever Orozco, 69, was killed Monday and his accused murderer said Orozco blew kisses at him.
The murder is not being tried as a hate crime, but activists say it’s the third anti-gay killing this year.
“It’s alarming,” said Shelby Chestnut, a community organizer at the organization. “This shouldn’t be tolerated.”
City Councilman Daniel Dromm (D-Jackson Heights) has been pushing for a school curriculum that would teach tolerance, but his efforts have stalled.
“Attacking gay people is totally unacceptable,” said Dromm, who is gay. The curriculum “would teach young people that gay people are your family, friends and neighbors.”
